GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for administering nursing service in accordance with current applicable guidelines and regulations to ensure the highest degree of quality resident care is maintained at all times. Act as the resident advocate and assumes the authority, responsibility and accountability for the quantity and quality of the resident care given on assigned shift.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct day to day functions of the nursing assistants in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines established by the Ohio Department of Health and CMS Life Safety Code and ensure that personnel providing direct care to residents are doing so in accordance with the residents’ care plan and wishes.
  • Direct the LPN that may be working the same unit in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines established by the Ohio Board of Nursing and ensure that care is provided to residents in accordance with the residents’ care plan and wishes.
  • Monitor assigned staff to ensure they are following established safety regulations and infection control techniques in the use of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure proper administration of all treatments and medications and accountability of all medications, including narcotics.
  • Administration of IV medications and fluids via peripheral or central lines within assigned unit and as needed throughout building as directed by the Nursing Supervisor.
  • Admit, transfer and discharge residents as required.
  • Meet with assigned staff as well as support personnel in planning the shifts’ services, programs and activities and make written and oral reports/recommendations concerning the activities of the shift using 24-hour report form as mechanism for communication.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary, report changes in condition and ensure appropriate documentation regarding such in the medical record.
  • Receive physician’s telephone orders and transcribe orders to resident chart, care plan, medication and treatment records.
  • Chart nurses’ notes in an informative and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided to the resident, as well as the resident’s response to that care.
  • Order prescribed medications, supplies and equipment as necessary, and in accordance with established policies.

  • Participate in employee performance evaluations, determine shift staffing requirements and make recommendations to unit managers/supervisors concerning employee discipline, dismissals, transfers, etc.
  • Inspect the nursing service treatment areas, resident lounges and rooms to ensure they are maintained in a clean and safe manner.
  • Review complaints and grievances made by the resident/family, making written and/or oral report to the nurse managers. Report all allegations of abuse and begin immediate investigation.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

EDUCATION:  Position requires licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) with current, active license in the State of Ohio.

 

EXPERIENCE: Long term care experience is preferred.

 

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Ability to understand, read, write and speak English.

Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Ability to lift and transfer residents (25 - 50 lbs.).

Be compassionate, friendly, kind, and understanding of the needs of the elderly.

Make proper judgments.

Possess high degree of personal cleanliness and hygiene.

Be cooperative with supervisors, fellow employees, and other departments.

Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and families.

Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with a wide range of people.

 

 

 OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Flexibility in managing schedule including weekends and evening hours.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license, access to reliable insured transportation and ability to meet LSS insurance standards required
